Marie of Valois, known as Marie de France, was a princess of the House of Valois and a religious figure of the early 15th century. The daughter of King Charles VI and Isabeau of Bavaria, she entered the convent of Poissy at a very young age, where she received education and treatment appropriate to her princely status. She took vows in 1408 and remained committed to monastic life for the rest of her life.
At the convent, Marie rose to the position of prioress, a role she performed notably in an institution that also contained family ties: the prioress at the time of her entry was her great‑aunt, Marie of Bourbon. Her vocation contrasted with the marital destinies of most of her siblings, as she was the only daughter to pursue a religious life.
She lived in a historical context marked by the instability of the Valois court—such as her father’s mental illness—and by the social and sanitary upheavals of the era. She died in 1438 of the plague and was buried at Poissy. Her legacy lies in the enduring presence of a royal family member within the female clergy and in the conventual administration of the early Valois period.
