Marie Eleonore von Brandenburg was a princess of Brandenburg and, by succession, Countess Palatine of the Simmern line, serving as regent of that principality from 1655 to 1658. Orphaned in childhood, she was raised by her uncle Christian and married Louis Philip of Simmern–Kaiserslautern, taking part with him in the administration of the Palatinate when it was temporarily restored by the Swedes in the 1630s. Marie Eleonore’s life was shaped by the upheavals of the Thirty Years’ War: after her husband was expelled by imperial troops in 1635, the couple lived in exile in Metz and Sedan. Widowed in 1655, she faced internal succession claims and, with the support of the Elector Frederick William, obtained imperial confirmation of her regency, which became known for her resolute defense of the interests of the House of Simmern. A patron and correspondent of the theologian Johannes Cocceius, she maintained intellectual and religious influence. She outlived nearly all her children, witnessing the extinction of the Simmern line and the return of its domains to the Electorate of the Palatinate. She was buried in St. Stephen’s Church in Simmern, having adopted the motto “God is my comfort and confidence.”
