Marie-Hermine of Jesus, born Irma (Louise Emma Émilie) Grivot, was a French nun of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary who became known for her missionary work in China at the end of the 19th century. From a modest background in Beaune, she left France to devote herself to healthcare and the care of children, joining a community that established an orphanage and a small hospital at the Taiyuan mission under the direction of Bishop Gregorio Grassi. As superior of the group of seven sisters who departed Marseille in 1899, she took on administrative and spiritual responsibilities in a context of rising anti-Western tension. When the Boxer Rebellion broke out, she refused to abandon her habit and flee in civilian dress after an order to withdraw, choosing instead to remain with the other sisters and the faithful under her care. In July 1900 she was killed in the event known as the Taiyuan massacre, amid widespread violence against missionaries and local Christians. Her martyrdom was later recognized by the Church: she was beatified in 1946 and canonized in 2000 among the so-called Martyrs of China. Marie-Hermine’s legacy is remembered for her dedication to caring for orphans and the wounded and for her steadfast religious commitment in the face of persecution.
