Marie Stopes was a British paleobotanist and writer whose scientific career opened opportunities for women in the sciences and produced lasting contributions to the study of fossil plants. Trained at University College London and holding a doctorate in botany from the University of Munich, she became known for work on cycad reproduction, the evolution of seeds, and the classification of coals; her book Ancient Plants (1910) made paleobotanical concepts accessible to the public and served as a pioneering English-language reference. As a researcher, Stopes took part in studies that helped support the idea of a supercontinent (Gondwana) through analysis of fossils such as Glossopteris, and she received international invitations, including from the Canadian government, to review Cretaceous collections. In Manchester she investigated the formation of coal balls, a proposal still regarded as plausible in paleobotany. Alongside her scientific career, she became a controversial public figure for her advocacy of contraception and for positions associated with eugenics; together with Humphrey Verdon Roe she founded the first birth control clinic in Britain and published Married Love (1918), a work that brought debates about sexuality and contraception into the public sphere. Her legacy combines notable scientific achievements and broad social impact, marked by later ethical controversies.
