Mariella Nava (stage name of Maria Giuliana Nava) is an Italian singer and songwriter whose career established itself both in performance and in writing for other artists. Trained at a conservatory, she first gained attention as a songwriter: the success of Questi figli, performed by Gianni Morandi in 1986, opened doors in the music industry and led to a contract with RCA. As a performer, she took part several times in the Sanremo Music Festival between the late 1980s and 2000, achieving notable results — including third place in 1999 with Così è la vita — and receiving critical recognition, such as the Targa Tenco for “Migliore Opera Prima.”
Over the course of her career she wrote songs for prominent names in Italian music — Ornella Vanoni, Mina, Renato Zero, Andrea Bocelli, Lucio Dalla, Gigi D’Alessio — and built long-standing collaborations, notably with Antonio Coggio and fellow arrangers from her region such as Geoff Westley and Luis Bacalov. Her repertoire addresses social and intimate themes, from family anxieties to political questions and taboos, prompting both controversy (the censorship of Dentro di me) and awards (the Lunezia Prize).
Nava’s legacy lies in the dual role of composer and performer: she left a mark as a songwriter for established artists and compiled a discography that engages with contemporary Italian song, blending classical training with pop and lyrical sensitivity.
