Marina Abramović is a central figure in contemporary performance, known for works that probe the limits of the body, endurance, and the relationship between artist and audience. Active since the 1970s, she developed rigorous methods—often involving pain, risk, and physical surrender—that redefined performative presence and the concept of artistic identity. Over more than four decades she created solo works and collaborations with Ulay (1976–1988), a partnership that produced emblematic moments such as The Lovers. Her practice includes series like Rhythm and pieces in which she exposed herself voluntarily to the public, turning spectators into essential participants of the work. In 2007 she founded the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI), devoted to preserving and promoting performance art. The 2010 retrospective at MoMA solidified her international reputation; the piece The Artist Is Present, in which she sat motionless for months, became a touchstone for discussions of presence, time, and gaze. She has published catalogues and books documenting her career and her ideas about the body and performance, and continues to exert lasting influence on generations of artists and curators working in live art.
