Marine Le Pen is a French lawyer and politician, known for leading and transforming the Front National—later renamed Rassemblement National—into an influential pole of nationalist right-wing politics. The daughter of Jean‑Marie Le Pen, she rose to the party’s leadership in 2011, pursuing a strategy of “de-demonization” intended to soften the party’s image and broaden its electoral base while retaining hardline positions on immigration, national identity, and economic protection. Over her career she has held regional offices, served as a Member of the European Parliament (2004–2017), and was a presidential candidate in 2012, 2017, and 2022, reaching the second round in 2017 and 2022. Since 2017 she has been a deputy in the National Assembly and president of her party’s parliamentary group. Her political career has shaped French public debate on globalization, security, and economic sovereignty, while her positions and actions have provoked controversy and polarization. In 2025 she was convicted of misappropriation of European Parliament funds and received a prison sentence and disqualification from office, a decision that affects her future political participation. Le Pen remains a central electoral figure and a symbolic leader in the French nationalist movement.
