Mario Ancona was one of the leading Italian baritones of the so-called “Golden Age of Opera,” recognized for his mastery of bel canto. Born in Livorno, he received his vocal training in Milan and quickly joined major European stages, making his professional debut in 1889; within a few years he was singing at La Scala. In 1892 he created the role of Silvio in Pagliacci under the baton of Arturo Toscanini, and he maintained a regular presence at houses such as the Royal Opera House and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as seasons in Paris, Buenos Aires, Moscow and various cities in the United States.
Critics praised him for technical elegance, an extended upper range and even timbre, and contemporaries regarded him as one of the most well-schooled Italian baritones of his generation. His repertoire included Verdi and the bel canto of Bellini and Donizetti, alongside roles in operas by Puccini, Leoncavallo, Mascagni and Mozart; he also adapted to French works and, occasionally, to Wagnerian repertoire.
He ended his stage career in 1916 and devoted himself to teaching. He left documentary archives and a substantial body of early twentieth-century phonographic recordings, now available in modern transfers.
