Mark Thomas Esper is an American politician and executive, known for holding senior defense positions during the Trump administration. A military officer by background—graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a Gulf War veteran—he advanced to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the reserves, earning decorations such as the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. After his military service, he moved into public and private roles: chief of staff at a conservative think tank, senior staffer on Capitol Hill, and executive positions in industry associations and at Raytheon, working mainly on government relations and security policy. Appointed Secretary of the Army in 2017, Esper championed priorities such as readiness, modernization, and efficiency, promoting initiatives to reform recruitment, raise entry standards, and create an acquisition structure oriented toward innovation (the future "Futures Command"). In 2019 he became Secretary of Defense, a post he held until 2020, when he left the administration. His legacy centers on emphasizing force modernization and strategic repositioning in response to rivals such as China, as well as fostering ties between the public sector and the defense industry during his executive career.
