Mark McGwire is a former American professional baseball player who played from 1986 to 2001, widely known for his long-distance hitting. He gained fame by breaking the single-season home run record, surpassing Roger Maris’s mark during the historic 1998 chase, and he had standout seasons with the Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals. With the Oakland A’s he won the 1989 World Series and, alongside José Canseco, formed the duo nicknamed the “Bash Brothers,” a nod to the team’s offensive power in the early 1990s. In 1997, already with the Cardinals, he produced a high-performing season that paved the way for his pursuit of the home run title. McGwire’s career is also marked by controversy over performance-enhancing substances. In 1998 he acknowledged using androstenedione; later, in 2010, he admitted to using anabolic steroids and expressed remorse. Those episodes have affected assessments of his legacy in the sport.
