Mark Thatcher is an English businessman known both for his connection to the Thatcher family and for a career marked by controversies. The son of Margaret and Sir Denis Thatcher, he attracted public attention in the 1970s and 1980s for international business ventures—particularly in the automotive and trading sectors—and for taking part in events such as the Paris–Dakar rally, during which he was missing for several days. Throughout his career, questions repeatedly arose about possible conflicts of interest between his business dealings and his mother's political activity, leading to investigations and inquiries into profits tied to large international contracts. Frequent changes of residence—including the United States, Switzerland, South Africa and other countries—accompanied his ventures and management of his assets. In 2004 he was detained in South Africa over his alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea; in 2005 he admitted breaching legislation against mercenary activity and received a suspended sentence and a fine. He inherited his father's baronetcy in 2003 and thereafter used the title “Sir.” Mark Thatcher’s career has been defined by a mix of international business activity, legal episodes and the notoriety that came from being related to a leading political figure in the United Kingdom.
