Marni Nixon (Margaret McEathron) was an American soprano whose voice became a recurring presence in Hollywood’s major musicals, though it was not always attached to the face on screen. She became famous for dubbing the singing parts of actresses such as Deborah Kerr (The King and I), Natalie Wood (West Side Story), and Audrey Hepburn (My Fair Lady), and she supplied high notes for Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. That informal work earned her nicknames like “The Voice of Hollywood” and the reputation of a “ghost singer” of classic musicals.
In addition to her dubbing career, Nixon worked as an actress—most notably as Sister Sophia in The Sound of Music (1965), where she was able to sing with on-screen credit—and maintained a substantial presence in musical theatre, playing roles such as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and appearing in Broadway revivals including Follies and Nine. She also recorded classical repertoire and American songs by composers such as Kern and Gershwin.
With the decline of film musicals, she shifted much of her career to the stage, children’s television, and concert work; she became better known to the public after the films were reissued and distributed on home video. Her career influenced discussions about artistic credit and the visibility of the voices behind iconic performances.
