Martha Joy Gottfried was a painter born in the United States who built her career in Mexico, noted for her extensive production of landscapes. Trained by teachers such as Ignacio Asúnsolo and Juan O'Gorman, she refined techniques in watercolor, tempera and oil, developing a method of making a monochrome field sketch on location and finishing works in the studio. Over the course of her career she held solo and group exhibitions at important Mexican institutions, including the Polyforum Cultural Siqueiros and the Museo de la Estampa, and her works were auctioned and acquired by institutional and private collections. Her work focuses on light, changing weather and landforms: mountains, deserts and Mexican volcanoes—especially Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl—appear in series that explore different seasons and viewpoints. She produced hundreds of canvases and was nicknamed by the press the “painter of all seasons” because of her interest in depicting the same subject under varying atmospheric conditions; she also created skyscapes, landscapes seen from the air. In addition to her activity as an artist, she taught in her own studio. Critics value her work for its direct transcription of the natural scene, emphasizing immediate appreciation of the landscape without complex conceptual elaboration.
