Marthe Richard (born Marthe Betenfeld) was a French public figure whose life combined adventure, scandal, and political activity. Beginning her adult life as a prostitute and later known for alleged espionage during World War I, she built an ambiguous image that mixes heroic accounts with disputed versions of her biography. Her public fame grew with the publication of sensational memoirs and film adaptations that made her a prominent figure in the popular imagination. In the 1920s she moved in affluent circles and, from World War II onward, established political standing: elected to the Paris municipal council for the MRP, she led a moral and legislative campaign against brothels. Her initiative culminated in the April 1946 law that ordered the closure of hundreds of brothels and ended the state-regulated system of prostitution in France, a measure that became associated with her name. Throughout her life she faced controversies over the truth of her claims, ambiguous relations during the occupation, and questions about her nationality by marriage—issues that prompted investigation and public debate. Marthe Richard’s legacy remains complex: she is credited with effecting a significant institutional change while also drawing criticism and doubt about other aspects of her life.
