Martin Heidegger was a German philosopher and university professor whose work decisively shaped twentieth-century philosophy. Initially associated with Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology, he developed an original inquiry into ontology, seeking to shift attention from questions about entities to the question of Being. His investigation culminates in Being and Time (1927), a central work in which he introduces concepts such as Dasein to describe human existence and rethink the condition of the subject.

Over the following decades, Heidegger broadened his interests to the history of thought, technology and language. He criticized the metaphysical tradition for leading to a world view instrumentalized by technology, and proposed hermeneutic readings of classic and poetic authors—for example, Hölderlin—as alternatives to that technological primacy.

His academic career was significant: he succeeded Husserl in Freiburg, served as rector, and became an influential figure in philosophical circles. However, his public reputation is marked by controversy: his membership in the Nazi Party and passages from the Black Notebooks have provoked intense debate about the relations between his philosophy and his political positions.

Heidegger’s legacy remains complex and consequential, influencing phenomenology, hermeneutics, continental philosophy and contemporary debates on technology, language and existence.
