Mary Dee, born Mary Elizabeth Goode and also known by her married name Mary Dudley, was an American radio broadcaster recognized as the country’s first African-American disc jockey. A graduate of the Si Mann School of Radio in Pittsburgh, she debuted on the air in 1948 and quickly expanded her program Movin' Around with Mary Dee, which blended music, news, and coverage of community issues. A pioneer of a format that combined public service and entertainment, Mary Dee gave voice to issues affecting Black communities — including policing, housing, and segregation — and created opportunities for reporters and colleagues such as Hazel Garland and Toki Schalk Johnson. Her programming featured both established artists and local talent and closed with a gospel segment much loved by listeners. Active in the 1950s and early 1960s, she broadcast from a storefront studio in Pittsburgh’s Hill District and later hosted programs in Baltimore and Philadelphia. She received national attention and awards for her civic work; posthumously she was honored with the Thomas J. MacWilliams Lifetime Achievement Award. Her legacy lies in her influence on community radio and in expanding the presence of women and Black people in broadcasting.
