Mary Ford, stage name of Iris Colleen Summers (El Monte, 1924–1977), was an American singer and guitarist best known for her partnership with guitarist Les Paul. The couple achieved major commercial success between 1950 and 1954, with 16 Top 10 hits and huge sales — in 1951 they sold six million records — establishing themselves as one of the most popular duos at the start of the rock and roll era and in postwar pop. Ford was notable both for her vocals and for technical innovation: the multitrack recordings made with Paul allowed her to harmonize with herself, producing an intimate and forward-sounding timbre for the time. The pair also popularized close-miking techniques that yielded a drier, more direct sound. In addition to their radio and record hits — including "Vaya con Dios," "How High the Moon," and "The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise" — Ford and Paul hosted radio and television programs and performed at Carnegie Hall and the White House. Their commercial decline in the 1950s culminated in divorce and the end of their professional partnership in 1962. In her later years Ford returned to occasional country shows and performances with her brothers. She died in 1977 at age 53, leaving a legacy as the central voice in one of the most influential studio experiments in twentieth-century popular music.
