Mary Palmer (née Reynolds) was an English writer from Devon, remembered for Devonshire Dialogue, a work in the local dialect that records customs, characters and speech of the west of England. Written in the mid‑eighteenth century and circulated in anonymous excerpts during her lifetime, the work received a partial edition in 1837 and complete versions prepared by relatives in 1839 and 1869. Daughter of Samuel Reynolds, a grammar schoolmaster, Mary belonged to a family prominent in the arts: she was the sister of the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds and of Frances Reynolds, and the mother of the painter Theophila Gwatkin. Her interest in the arts and her financial support for Joshua’s training — including contributions toward his apprenticeship with Thomas Hudson and his trip to Italy — underscore her role within the family’s cultural circle. She married in 1740 to John Palmer, a lawyer who served three terms as mayor of Great Torrington, where the family played a notable local role; the house he built, now known as Palmer House, hosted distinguished visitors such as Samuel Johnson. Mary Palmer’s legacy lies in preserving a vernacular record and providing testimony about rural English life in the eighteenth century.
