Mary Wollstonecraft was an English writer and philosopher, recognized as a pioneer of modern feminist thought. She became famous for A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), a work in which she challenged the notion of women’s natural inferiority and argued for equal access to education, proposing a social order based on reason and personal autonomy.
Over a brief career she published novels, political treatises, a history of the French Revolution, travel writing, a conduct manual, and books for children, demonstrating intellectual range and a commitment to social reform. Her personal experiences — including early family responsibilities and work as a governess and educator — informed her critiques of the restrictions placed on women in her time.
The posthumous publication of intimate memoirs by William Godwin damaged her reputation in the nineteenth century, but with the rise of feminist movements in the twentieth century her ideas regained prominence. Wollstonecraft left a lasting legacy as a theoretical reference for gender equality and an inspiration to generations of activists and thinkers.
