Massimo Ranieri, stage name of Giovanni Calone, is an Italian singer and actor whose career spans music, film and theatre. Born into a humble family in Naples, he began a youth career in the United States as Gianni Rock before returning to Italy, where he achieved success in the 1960s with television performances and records that made him a popular figure on the Italian pop scene and in other European countries. His repertoire includes memorable hits such as "Rose Rosse," which won him the Canzonissima competition in 1969, and "Perdere l'amore," with which he won the Sanremo Music Festival in 1988. He represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1971, strengthening his international presence. Over the decades he has alternated a recording career—with numerous albums and singles released since the 1960s—with acting in films and television productions. Also recognized for his cultural role, Ranieri has maintained lasting importance in the Italian popular repertoire, moving between traditional Neapolitan song and contemporary pop. His long artistic career and the variety of formats he worked in (live shows, recordings and cinema) explain his notoriety and influence on the postwar Italian musical scene.
