Mathilda May, stage name of Karin Haïm, is a French actress and theatre director whose career began in classical dance. Born into an artistic family—daughter of playwright Victor Haïm and a Swedish ballet teacher—she trained at the Conservatoire de Paris and moved into film early, debuting in 1984. She became known internationally for the role of the mysterious vampire in Lifeforce (1985) and established herself in French cinema in films directed by figures such as Claude Chabrol and Jacques Demy.
Over the following decades she worked in international co-productions and across different genres, from drama to thriller, as well as in television performances and stage work from 1994 onward. She received the Romy Schneider Prize in 1989, an award recognizing promising young talent in Francophone cinema.
In the 2010s she expanded her work as a metteuse en scène, directing productions on the Paris circuit; in 2019 she was honored with a Molière for the play Le Banquet. Her career moves between acting on stage and directing, with a presence in both audiovisual media and contemporary theatre.
