Maurice Blanchot was a French writer, philosopher, and literary theorist whose work developed a rigorous reflection on language, death, and the literary experience. Active as a journalist and critic before and during the Second World War, Blanchot helped shape French critical thought by questioning the relation between word, truth, and rhetoric, and he maintained a complex intellectual stance during the occupation and the postwar period.
Author of more than thirty titles of fiction and essays, he produced central works such as The Space of Literature, The Writing of the Disaster, and Thomas l’Obscur, in which he examines the materiality of language and advances the idea that literature arises when the very practice of writing becomes problematic. His hypothesis about “the neutral” and his formulation of a philosophy of death influenced post-structuralist thinkers including Deleuze, Foucault, and Derrida.
Politically and culturally engaged, he signed the Manifesto of the 121 and supported the May 1968 protests, while leading a life marked by isolation. Blanchot’s legacy endures in contemporary literary theory and the philosophy of language, both for the theoretical density and the ethical and aesthetic ambiguity of his writings.
