Maurice Koechlin was a Franco-Swiss engineer whose career was prominent in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th for the structural design of notable metal works. Trained at the Polytechnikum in Zurich and the École Centrale in Paris, he served as head of the design office at Gustave Eiffel’s firm, contributing to the Garabit viaduct and signing the structural framework of the Statue of Liberty designed by Bartholdi. Koechlin is chiefly remembered for the idea and the calculations for the metal tower erected in Paris for the 1889 Exposition; he collaborated with Émile Nouguier on the initial proposal, while the final architectural design was by Stephen Sauvestre. Although public credit favored Gustave Eiffel, Koechlin played a key role in the conception and the technical oversight of the work until its completion. During his career he directed the Société de Construction de Levallois-Perret and coordinated projects such as the metal bridge at La Mulatière for the Lyon–Saint-Étienne railway link. He published translations and treatises on graphic statics and bridge typologies, contributing to the development of structural engineering in a period of rapid expansion of metal structures.
