German-British physicist and mathematician Max Born was a central figure in the development of quantum mechanics and left a lasting mark on solid-state physics and optics. His formulation of the statistical interpretation of the wave function—linking ψ*ψ to probability density—became one of the theory’s conceptual pillars and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1954.
In Göttingen, where leading mathematicians and physicists gathered, Born created a fertile scientific environment: he supervised and trained generations of researchers who became prominent figures of the twentieth century, including several laureates and leaders in theoretical physics. Together with Werner Heisenberg he collaborated on the construction of matrix mechanics, contributing directly to the formalization of quantum theory.
Persecuted by the Nazi regime because of his Jewish origin, he emigrated to the United Kingdom, where he continued his academic career in Cambridge and Edinburgh, promoting physics through authoritative works and textbooks aimed at teaching. His legacy includes both fundamental theoretical advances and lasting institutional and pedagogical influence on successive generations of physicists.
