Max Heindel, born Carl Louis Fredrik Graßhoff, was a Danish-born occultist, astrologer, and Christian mystic who settled in the United States. A former naval engineer whose long voyages provided wide cultural exposure, Heindel turned to the study of metaphysics and Theosophy in the early 20th century, blending those influences with an esoteric outlook rooted in Rosicrucian Christianity. Drawing on personal experiences and alleged communications with a “Senior Brother” of the Rosicrucian Order, he formulated and published in 1909 The Rosicrucian Cosmo‑Conception, in which he links science and religion and outlines a cosmology and a path of spiritual evolution. That work became a standard for practices within Christian mysticism and Western occultism. Between 1909 and 1911 he founded the Rosicrucian Fellowship at Mount Ecclesia in Oceanside, California, organizing lectures, correspondence courses, the magazine Rays from the Rose Cross, and a spiritual healing service. His teaching and publishing work established a tradition of esoteric instruction that continues among students of his writings.
