Max Reger was a German composer, pianist, organist, conductor and teacher whose work marked the transition between contrapuntal tradition and the early 20th‑century post‑Romantic language. Trained by teachers such as Hugo Riemann and influenced both by sacred music and the innovations of Wagner, Reger became known for an extensive output for organ, piano, chamber music, choirs and orchestral works. His career included important posts: musical director at the university church in Leipzig, professor at the Royal Conservatory of Leipzig and Hofkapellmeister at the court of Saxe‑Meiningen. Among his best‑known orchestral works is the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Mozart (1914); for chorus and orchestra he wrote notable pieces such as Gesang der Verklärten (1903), Der 100. Psalm (1909) and the Hebbel Requiem (1915). Reger was also active as a recitalist and pedagogue, earning a reputation for contrapuntal erudition and for revisiting classical forms with dense harmonic language. His output influenced both the organ repertoire and the development of German choral music. He died in 1916, leaving a body of works that remain part of liturgical and concert repertoire.
