Max Schmeling was a German boxer who rose to worldwide prominence when he became world heavyweight champion from 1930 to 1932. Known for a scientific, counterpunching style, he became the first and only person to win the title by disqualification, in a controversial fight against Jack Sharkey. His career included significant defenses, notable victories in the United States and a rapid rise after arriving in New York in 1928. The bouts with Joe Louis in 1936 and 1938 brought Schmeling attention beyond the ring, taking on symbolic meaning during a period of rising national tensions. He defeated Louis in their first meeting but was knocked out in the rematch. Schmeling later maintained a friendship with Louis that lasted for decades. During World War II he served as a paratrooper in the Luftwaffe and, after ending his professional career in 1948, worked in the private sector, notably for Coca‑Cola. Decades later it emerged that in 1938 he risked his life to help two Jewish children, a gesture that helped prompt a reassessment of his legacy. Regarded as an icon of German boxing, Schmeling died at 99 and remains a central figure in heavyweight history, remembered both for his sporting achievements and for the complex interactions between his life and the political context of his time.
