Max Skladanowsky was a German inventor and pioneering filmmaker active in the late 19th century. Trained in photography and glass painting, he developed an interest in magic lanterns and, together with his brother Emil, devoted himself to projection and exhibition technology. He was chiefly responsible for building the Bioscop, a dual-lens projector that alternated two film reels and enabled one of the first public screenings of moving images in Germany. In 1895 the Skladanowsky brothers presented a short film program at Berlin’s Wintergarten, attracting a well-heeled audience and considerable attention. The program combined the novelty of the Bioscop with variety acts; although well received, it could not compete with later devices—above all the Lumière brothers’ Cinématographe—which proved more practical and produced better image quality. In subsequent years Max refined cameras and projectors, filmed urban scenes and performances, and took part in European tours. As Bioscop screenings declined, he returned to photography, produced flip books and magic lanterns, and sold amateur equipment, leaving a technical legacy important to the beginnings of cinema.
