Max Wertheimer

Max Wertheimer was a psychologist born in Prague, recognized as one of the founders of Gestalt psychology alongside Kurt Koffka and Wolfgang Köhler. His work on perception and thought — especially the description of the phi phenomenon and the book Productive Thinking — established the idea that the mind organizes experience as meaningful wholes rather than as mere sums of elements. Trained in philosophy and psychology, he conducted pioneering research on the perception of movement and, in 1912, published experimental studies that laid the foundations of Gestalt theory. He worked at major German institutions, including the University of Frankfurt and the Psychological Institute in Berlin, where he developed his theoretical work in the years between the two world wars. With the rise of the Nazi regime, he emigrated to the United States in 1933 and joined the faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York, remaining there until his death. In addition to experimental research, he wrote philosophical essays on truth, ethics, democracy, and freedom, applying Gestalt principles to the understanding of the individual in social life. His legacy remains central to the psychology of perception and cognitive thought: the notion of wholeness and Gestalt principles continue to influence perceptual theory, education, and cognitive psychology.
