Maxine Sullivan was an American jazz singer and performer whose career stretched across roughly fifty years, from the mid-1930s until shortly before her death in 1987. She became known for her 1937 recording of a swing arrangement of "Loch Lomond," which helped define her approach: swinging takes on folk songs and standards, often arranged by Claude Thornhill. Her musicianship influenced later generations of female singers and was cited by Peggy Lee as a point of reference.
Throughout her career Sullivan appeared at prominent New York clubs, on radio—together with John Kirby she starred in the weekly program Flow Gently Sweet Rhythm, one of the earliest slots given to Black jazz artists—and in film and theater. She worked with figures such as Teddy Wilson, Benny Carter, and Jimmie Lunceford, and in 1958 appeared in the famous photograph A Great Day in Harlem.
In the second half of her life she alternated music with other activities, returned to the scene in the 1960s, and continued recording and performing into the 1980s; she was nominated for a Tony Award in 1979 and was posthumously inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1998. Her legacy is that of a performer who helped establish jazz singing in the early decades of the swing era.
