Med Flory, born Meredith Irwin Flory, was an American alto saxophonist who also worked as a film and television actor. Trained in philosophy, he began his musical career after serving in the Army Air Corps and joined big bands such as those led by Woody Herman and Claude Thornhill, later establishing himself in the West Coast jazz scene.
In the 1970s he co-founded, with bassist Buddy Clark, the nine-piece group Supersax, dedicated to the music of Charlie Parker; the ensemble earned critical acclaim and won a Grammy for Supersax Plays Bird (1974). His recording and performance career placed him consistently within the West Coast jazz movement, with notable collaborations including Art Pepper and Joe Maini.
Alongside his musical work, Flory built a long career as an actor, appearing in popular television series of the 1960s and 1970s — such as Maverick, Perry Mason, Route 66, and Gunsmoke — and in numerous films, often in supporting roles. His legacy is defined by his dual role as an instrumental performer and a frequent presence on American television.
