Melvyn Douglas was an American actor whose career in theater, film and television spanned from the 1920s to the early 1980s. He first gained recognition as a sophisticated leading man and became established during Hollywood’s Golden Age, appearing opposite stars such as Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford. Over the course of his career he moved into fatherly and mature roles, noted for restrained, humane performances.

He won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor (for Hud, 1963, and Being There, 1979), a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play (The Best Man, 1960) and an Emmy (1967), thereby achieving the rare Triple Crown of Acting. He was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for I Never Sang for My Father (1970). His work is remembered for blending elegance with dramatic seriousness.

Active offstage as well, Douglas served during both world wars — including in Armed Forces entertainment units during World War II — and was politically engaged as a New Deal Democrat and opponent of fascism in the 1930s and 1940s. His artistic legacy includes central performances in classics such as Ninotchka and Captains Courageous, and he has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his influence in film and television.
