Michael Duane Johnson is a former American sprinter, regarded as one of the greatest athletes in modern track and field. Specializing in the 200 m and 400 m, he won four Olympic gold medals and multiple World Championship titles, and held world records in both events. His 200 m/400 m double at Atlanta 1996 — the only time a man has achieved both in the same edition of the Games — and the 200 m world record of 19.32 made him a benchmark in sprinting.

Over his career he amassed notable achievements: his first major individual victory at the 1991 World Championships, doubles at the World Championships (1995), and decisive roles in 4x400 m relays, including historic legs such as the 42.91 split in Stuttgart 1993. His technique and gear — notably the famous “golden spikes” — became part of the public image of his dominance on the track.

His career was also affected by injuries and by doping scandals involving teammates, which led to lost relay titles and cast a shadow over some of his team achievements. After retiring from competition, Johnson worked as a sports commentator and columnist, remaining prominent in major athletics coverage and preserving his legacy as one of the most influential sprinters in history.
