Michael Baigent was a New Zealand–born writer based in the United Kingdom, known for works that challenged conventional historical and religious views. He became famous as coauthor of The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (1982), a book that popularized the hypothesis of an earthly bloodline linked to Jesus and Mary Magdalene and the existence of secret societies; the thesis circulated widely and influenced subsequent works of fiction and popular culture.
Over his career he also published titles on the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Inquisition and the history of Mesopotamian astrology, which were not always well received by the academic community: critics pointed to factual errors, speculative reasoning and the use of controversial sources, creating controversy about the nature of his hypotheses. In 2006 he was involved in litigation against the publisher of a novel that used similar themes; the action was ultimately unsuccessful.
A regular participant in and contributor to Masonic publications, Baigent also studied mysticism and religious experience, earning a master’s degree in the field. His work left an ambiguous legacy: he popularized alternative narratives about modern religious history and prompted debates about the boundaries between historical inquiry, speculation and entertainment.
