Michael Butler was an American businessman and theatrical producer, best known for bringing the rock musical Hair to Broadway and to international audiences. After seeing an off‑Broadway production in 1967, he purchased the rights and oversaw multiple stagings: the show ran on Broadway for four years and spawned numerous national and international productions, becoming a cultural phenomenon of the 1960s.
In addition to Hair, Butler produced other works, including the play Lennie (1971) and the musical Reggae (1980). His career combined business activity with political involvement: initially a candidate and aide within Illinois Democratic circles, he became an antiwar activist during the Hair period, financially supporting progressive causes and arranging meetings between activists and local leaders.
Coming from a family with longstanding business ties in Chicago, Butler maintained close social relationships with public and artistic figures throughout his life. His work on Hair is notable for its cultural impact and for linking theatrical production with political engagement, leaving a mark on the history of American musical theatre.
