Michael Howard, born Michael Hecht, is a British conservative politician whose career includes senior ministerial posts and leadership of the Conservative Party from 2003 to 2005. Trained as a lawyer, he became Queen’s Counsel in 1982 and entered Parliament in 1983 as MP for Folkestone and Hythe, a platform that quickly led to roles in the governments of Margaret Thatcher and later John Major. He held portfolios including Employment, Environment and, most notably, Home Secretary, where he pursued a tough line on crime and a restrictive criminal justice policy.
