Michael James Owen is a former English striker whose professional career drew widespread attention from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s. A product of Liverpool’s youth system, he made an immediate impact by debuting with a goal and becoming the Premier League’s top scorer in 1997–98, and was voted PFA Young Player of the Year. His international profile rose after his memorable goal against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup. At Liverpool, Owen was part of the side that enjoyed an exceptionally successful 2000–01 season, winning the League Cup, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup; he was decisive in the FA Cup final, scoring two late goals against Arsenal. In 2001 he received the Ballon d’Or in recognition of his individual performances. Transferred to Real Madrid in 2004, he experienced highs and lows amid strong competition for places in attack, but still contributed important goals. He later returned to English football with spells at clubs including Newcastle United and Manchester United. Renowned for his pace and goalscoring instinct, he is remembered as one of the leading English prospects of his generation.
