Michel Jean Pierre Verne was a French writer and editor, best known as the only son and literary heir of Jules Verne. Active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he took responsibility for publishing numerous manuscripts left by his father and has been accused of having rewritten or even entirely composed some works originally attributed to Jules Verne. Among the texts now credited to Michel are O Volcan d'or (a revision of a paternal manuscript), L'Éternel Adam and L'Agence Thompson and Co., the latter attributed wholly to him. His literary career lived under the shadow of controversy: contemporary and later critics regard his works as inferior to his father's, and debates continue over political alterations Michel introduced in the final volumes of the Voyages extraordinaires. Some of his narratives, such as Les Naufragés du « Jonathan », exhibit more pronounced political tendencies than their original versions. Beyond his editorial and authorial activity, Michel Verne left a legacy by preserving and organizing his father's papers, a role that ensured the posthumous circulation of Jules Verne's texts—works that remain the subject of study in francophone literary and publishing history.
