Michele Sindona was an Italian-American banker whose career became entwined with financial power, organized crime, and religious institutions. Known in financial circles as “The Shark,” he became a controversial figure for his ties to the Sicilian mafia and to the Gambino family in the United States, as well as for his membership in the Masonic lodge P2, led by Licio Gelli. Appointed financial adviser to the Vatican and a member of the board of the Institute for the Works of Religion during the pontificate of Paul VI, Sindona was later regarded by the institution itself as an impostor who had deceived it. Judicial investigations identified him as serving as a banker for the Cosa Nostra from the 1950s onward. Involved in financial and criminal scandals, he was convicted as the instigator of the 1979 murder of lawyer Giorgio Ambrosoli. Held in a high-security prison, he died in custody in 1986 after ingesting potassium cyanide; the official inquiry concluded suicide. The case left a legacy of questions and repercussions about the intersection of finance, crime, and institutional power in postwar Italy.
