Michio Kaku is an American theoretical physicist, a full professor at the City College of New York and the CUNY Graduate Center, known both for his academic work and for extensive science communication. The author of best-selling books including Physics of the Impossible, Physics of the Future and The God Equation, Kaku has made complex topics in theoretical physics—such as string theory and quantum field theory—accessible to a broad audience through books, radio programs and television and documentary appearances. In academia, his contributions include papers on superstrings, supergravity and supersymmetry and, in the 1970s, coauthorship of formulations of string theory in field form. At the same time, his public career broadened the reach of science: he has presented series and documentaries for the BBC, Discovery and the Science Channel, and hosted long-running radio programs. Kaku is also a commentator on technology, the future and science policy, addressing issues such as space exploration, global warming, nuclear risks and space debris. His work combines research, teaching and communication, and his legacy lies in popularizing physics and bridging academic science with public culture.
