Mike Mills (Michael Edward Mills) is an American musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, best known as a founding member and bassist of the alternative rock band R.E.M. In the group he was noted for his versatility — in addition to bass and backing vocals he contributed keyboards and occasional lead vocals — and he wrote or co-wrote several key songs in the band’s repertoire. Musically formed since his teenage years, Mills brought to the band a formal training that influenced the harmonic and melodic development of its songs; he is credited on well-known tracks such as “Nightswimming,” “Find the River,” “Electrolite” and “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?”. His work on piano and keyboards was decisive on albums like Around the Sun (2004), and his vocal harmonies are a hallmark on records such as Lifes Rich Pageant and Accelerate. Outside R.E.M., Mills has taken part in a variety of projects: he recorded with Warren Zevon, was a member of The Baseball Project, collaborated with Drive-By Truckers and has participated in concerts centered on Big Star’s Third. He has also worked on contemporary symphonic projects, including a Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and Orchestra, and has received cultural honors, among them the naming of a mushroom species after him.
