Mileva Marić was a Serbian physicist and mathematician who became one of the first women to study in the Department of Mathematics and Physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ). Noted for her high marks in physics and mathematics, she entered at a time when female presence in higher education was rare and faced personal and institutional obstacles that shaped her academic career.

She married Albert Einstein in 1903 and had three children. Her scientific career was interrupted by her 1901 pregnancy, when she failed to complete her degree and lost the chance to pursue a project that might have led to a doctorate. Contemporary documents and letters record that she played an important role in the couple’s intellectual and personal life during their early years together.

After separation and divorce, Marić took responsibility for caring for the children, especially after the youngest son was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which forced her to sell family possessions to pay for his treatment. Her legacy remains linked both to the restrictions faced by women scientists in the early twentieth century and to the historical debate over her participation in the development of the period’s scientific ideas.
