Mircea Eliade was a Romanian professor, scholar of religions, mythologist, philosopher and novelist. He spoke and wrote fluently in eight languages (Romanian, French, German, Italian, English, Hebrew, Persian and Sanskrit), but most of his academic work was initially written in Romanian (later in French and in English). He is one of the most influential scholars and philosophers of religion of the contemporary era. He was a member of the Eranos Circle, from which he received and exchanged various theoretical references.
Considered one of the leading figures of the twentieth century in the Study of Religion, he developed a comparative view of religions, finding close relationships between different cultures and historical periods. At the center of human religious experience, Eliade places the notion of the Sacred. His formal training as a philosopher combined with his self-taught formation as a scholar of religions led him to the study of myths, dreams, visions, mysticism and ecstasy.
In India, he studied yoga and read, directly in Sanskrit, classical Hindu texts that had not yet been translated into Western languages. A prolific author, he sought to find a synthesis of the themes he addressed. In his writings, the concept of hierophany is frequently highlighted, through which Eliade defined the manifestation of the transcendent in an object or a phenomenon of the cosmos.
