Moina Mathers (born Mina Bergson) was an artist and occultist active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Trained at the Slade School of Art, she distinguished herself as a draughtswoman and illustrator, took part in London artistic circles, and maintained ties with patrons such as Annie Horniman. She married Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and became the first woman initiated into that organization in 1888. In the role of “seeress” she complemented her husband’s ritual work, creating images and representations used in the group’s esoteric practices. She took part in public stagings of occult rites, such as the ceremonies in honor of Isis presented in Paris in 1899. After her husband’s death in 1918 she assumed leadership of the successor organization, the Rosicrucian Order of Alpha et Omega, playing a central role in maintaining the occult tradition. Her career is remembered for the connection between artistic practice and ritual imagery, and for her influence within Western occult networks during a period of intense cultural and esoteric exchange.
