Monica Seles is a former tennis player born in Novi Sad (then Yugoslavia) who made a major impact on women’s tennis in the 1990s. Naturalized American, she was noted for the power of her game — two-handed forehands and backhands — and became a model for the forceful style that shaped later generations. She won nine Grand Slam titles and, at 16, became the youngest champion at Roland-Garros in 1990.
From 1991 to 1993 Seles dominated the tour: she collected 22 titles in that span and posted an exceptional winning percentage, rising to world No. 1. Her technical range and aggressive returning made her nearly unbeatable on hard and clay courts, securing her place among the greatest players of the modern era.
In April 1993 she was the victim of an attack that interrupted her career for two years; she returned to the tour in 1996 and won the Australian Open, her final major. She retired from professional tennis in 2003 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009, leaving a lasting sporting legacy and continuing influence on women’s tennis.
