Moritz Geiger was a German philosopher associated with the phenomenological tradition. Trained in Munich, he deepened his studies with Theodor Lipps and, under the influence of Edmund Husserl, joined the so-called Munich phenomenological school. He took part in the editorial direction of the Jahrbuch für Philosophie und phänomenologische Forschung, contributing to the European academic dialogue on consciousness and experience.
His academic career included his habilitation in 1907, a chair in Munich and, in 1923, the title of full professor in Göttingen. Like many intellectuals of his generation, he was forced into exile with the rise of Nazism and in 1933 moved to the United States, where he taught at institutions including Vassar College and Stanford.
In the field of aesthetics, he became notable for the work Approcci all'estetica (1928), in which he developed a phenomenological aesthetics that distinguishes pleasure from happiness, attributing to the work of art the capacity to produce an experience of "happiness" that reflects an objective value of the work. He also published essays on relativity, the unconscious and the foundations of geometry.
His influence appears in the formation of thinkers such as Hans-Georg Gadamer and Walter Benjamin, leaving a legacy in the philosophy of experience and twentieth-century aesthetics.
