Moshe Dayan

Moshe Dayan was an Israeli military officer and political leader whose image became a symbol of the struggle and consolidation of the State of Israel in the 20th century. He rose to prominence as a commander on the Jerusalem front in 1948 and as Chief of Staff during the Suez Crisis (1956), but gained international attention when he became Minister of Defense on the eve of the Six-Day War (1967). Losing an eye during World War II operations and wearing his characteristic eye patch made him an iconic figure. Throughout his career, Dayan moved among major political currents: he drew closer to David Ben‑Gurion, joined Rafi with Shimon Peres, and later affiliated with the government led by Likud, serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1978 he played a significant role in the negotiations that led to the peace treaty with Egypt. His role in the Yom Kippur War (1973) and the public inquiry into the country’s preparedness affected his reputation and led to his resignation as defense minister, after which he wrote his memoirs. Born in a pioneering kibbutz, Dayan left a legacy as a military commander, a controversial political figure, and a pragmatic diplomat in the peace process.
