Murray Gell‑Mann was an American theoretical physicist whose work was central to the understanding of elementary particles. He is best known for introducing the concept of quarks, proposing a systematic classification of strongly interacting particles, and for contributing to the formulation of quantum chromodynamics, the core of the Standard Model that describes the strong interaction. He received the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions. He also helped develop foundational ideas such as the renormalization group in quantum field theory and the notion of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking, important for the physics of light mesons and weak interactions. Over the course of his career he taught at institutions including Caltech and worked at international research centers. He was also a cofounder of the Santa Fe Institute, devoted to the study of complex systems. His influence extends both to particle theory and to the promotion of interdisciplinary approaches in science, leaving a lasting legacy in twentieth-century theoretical physics.
