Félix Nadar, the pen name of Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, was a central figure in nineteenth-century French cultural life as a photographer, caricaturist, journalist and inventor associated with ballooning. Recognized as one of the first great portraitists, he documented the intellectual and political elite of his time and helped elevate photography to the status of art, publicly defending its technical and aesthetic dimensions. His Paris studio became a landmark from 1854 to 1949, where his brother Adrien and his son Paul worked; the legal dispute known as the “Nadar Trial” consolidated his right to his name and artistic identity. Nadar also innovated in methods: he introduced electric lighting, made long-exposure photographs and recorded previously unseen scenes such as the sewers and catacombs of Paris. Passionate about human flight, he patented ideas for aerial photography and built the balloon Géant, as well as using captive balloons and carrier pigeons for communications during the 1870 siege—actions that influenced contemporaries such as Jules Verne. His work and technical experiments left a lasting legacy in the history of photography and the imagery of the nineteenth century.
