Nat Adderley (Nathaniel Adderley) was an American cornetist, composer and bandleader, recognized for his central role in the development of soul jazz. The younger brother of saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, he played for many years in the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, also serving as the group's composer and manager during its most successful period. His piece "Work Song" (1960) became a jazz standard and a steady source of royalties, cementing his reputation as a writer of enduring tunes. Before achieving national prominence, he played with figures such as Lionel Hampton, J. J. Johnson and Woody Herman, and collaborated with musicians including Kenny Clarke and Wes Montgomery. In the brothers' quintet he helped shape the sound that came to be identified as soul jazz, while maintaining ties to the traditions of hard bop and bebop. After Cannonball's death, Nat built an independent career: he led international tours, formed groups such as the Adderley Brotherhood, recorded extensively—nearly one hundred albums—and worked as a teacher and artist-in-residence, contributing to festivals and to the training of new musicians. Known for favoring the darker timbre of the cornet over the trumpet, he left a legacy as one of the main advocates of the instrument in modern jazz.
